Depression, anxiety may be helped by yoga
Yoga may help those that suffer from depression and anxiety. Boston researchers suggested that this is possible by elevating brain gamma-aminobutyric, or GABA, levels.
Low GABA levels are some indications of depression and anxiety disorders. Thus, pharmaceutical agents are designed to increase GABA levels. By using magnetic resonance spectroscopic imaging, Â to compare the GABA levels of eight subjects have found to increase 27 percent GABA levels after one hour of yoga.
How to cure anxiety ? Looks like ancient relaxation does help.

For the most acute panic or anxiety symptoms, basic mindfulness exercises–even for just 10 minutes every hour or two throughout the day–are required, at least in the absence of medication-induced sleep. It is not the be-all end-all, but it really can help a person feel functional, even when virtually all hope seems lost. It’s very important to note, however, that these exercises must be learned and integrated in moments when the anxiety doesn’t seem overwhelming; otherwise, a person learns to associate the supposed-to-be calming mindfulness work with increasing anxiety. That’s no good.
If a person finds him/herself anxious to the point where it feels impossible to even learn how to integrate basic mindfulness activities, a few sessions with a psychologist or psychotherapist might be useful. For those who live and work in the nation’s capital, I am a psychotherapist in Washington, DC, and I would be glad to arrange a consult to see if I could be of help.
But, then again, a yoga class might prove equally helpful toward that goal!

Thanks for the post, although the statement “Yoga may help those that suffer from depression and anxiety.” would better have read “Yoga DOES help thos that are suffering from depression and anxiety.”
Yoga helps you to achieve maximum balance, coordination, flexibility, body sculpting as well as spiritual relaxation. The art of Yoga harmonizes the body, mind and spirit. The practice of Yoga helps to achieve balance proper breathing and comforting mental contemplation.

Yoga really helps overcome different forms of anxiety and depression. When you’re engaged in a class with others, within minutes you’re so encompassed by yourself and the state of mind you’re in that the people around you aren’t in the forefront of your mind. Given time, you actually start talking to the people in class. Before you know it, you’re talking to people and self-motivating yourself to engage in activities that you never thought possible. One good example stems from a person I know that couldn’t for the life of her get onto the streetcar in San Francisco to get to work. She opted for a cab and stuck with that for years. After seeing her @ a recent retreat, she told me how last Spring she finally felt at peace enough within herself to get on that streetcar. After a few tries, she did it on the 4th day. After sharing that story w/ our group, it was all hugs and praises. By using the techniques to calm and center your mind and body the way Yoga trains you to do, you have this “strange” side-effect in believing that anything that stopped you from doing any sort of activity is gone. It works given time. I am a true believer.

It is my experience that just about any form of exercise is good in both the short term and long term for reducing anxiety and related disorders. I think that yoga falls right into that category. It helps to relieve muscle tension and increase flexibility. It also helps you to calm down and become centered spiritually.

Yes I agree completely , Yoga and other exercises are good anxiety relievers , we should never underestimate how anxiety and depression affects our health. If left untreated they could lead to health problems which in turn could increase our level of anxiety and depression.
We should reserve maybe an hour or two a day for exercise and relaxation. And these solutions are cheap even free. I rather do this than end up spending hundreds of dollars on medical fees.

Anxious people should exercise at least 2 – 3 times everyday. Yoga will help as well, and some personal coaching will do great.
I`m an ex sufferer totally cured now, I`ve been following Joe Berry`s Panic away, I only get from time to time some kind of chest pain, don`t know for what reason really.
Relaxation is vital in anxiety.

About 6 years ago I was diagnosied with Bi-polar disorder. They had me on zoloft, topomax, I forget the other meds, and trazadone. Then I lost my business and consequently my medical insurance. I dropped about 20 lbs (good thing)but nothing tasted good and I just wanted to sleep. There is so much more to my story….

Hi All,
Yes YOGA and Meditation is the best way to synchronize ” mind and body “.
YOGA is nothing but “to be aware”. If you are aware of that and keep your mind away from negative thought that is called YOGA.
